Nostalgic notes

As we often unconsciously segue from one musical era to another, the cultural, emotional, and social values that define older periods resurface dramatically when we revisit them. The powerful reminiscence of such “throwback” music is regarded as an emotional phenomenon, but where does this stem from? Well, the human brain is skilled at remembering music, but more importantly, it associates tunes with certain memories, images, and feelings. In some cases, older songs have been found with such a distinct connection to events in the past that they’ve alleviated symptoms of dementia. Nostalgic music can also strengthen damaged relationships by revisiting happier times. The power of throwback songs is undeniable, so, the next time you catch onto some electronic Lady Gaga beats or fiery Beyoncé vocals, your mind is likely to reminisce on the overcrowded school bus rides or hilarious recess games of way-back-when.
